One of the biggest issues I faced when I first moved to Gainesville was getting used to lack of Cuban food around the city. Being from Miami, I’m used to having Cuban restaurants, bakeries, and cafes on every corner. It’s tough to find delicious Cuban food outside of South Florida, but there a couple of places that come really close!

Uno de los mayores problemas que enfrenté cuando me mudé a Gainesville fue acostumbrarme a la falta de comida cubana en la ciudad. Siendo de Miami, estoy acostumbrado a tener restaurantes cubanos, panaderías y cafeterías en cada esquina. Es difícil encontrar deliciosa comida cubana fuera del sur de Florida, ¡pero hay un par de lugares que realmente se acercan!

La Cocina De Abuela 

125 NW 23rd Ave, Gainesville, FL 32609

I LOVE this little restaurant. Coming here really makes me feel like I’m home again. The restaurant itself just has that Miami feel. It’s a little far from campus, but worth the drive. The menu changes daily, but the prices are great. The dishes that really stand out here are the Ropa Vieja and Media Noche sandwich. Ropa Vieja is always a hit or miss for me, but here it was a definite HIT! The meat soft and paired well with their rice and beans. Ropa Vieja is shredded beef with some tomato sauce on top. I’d get this everyday if I could. Their Media Noche is also phenomenal. It reminds me of the ones from Sergio’s in Miami. They take pride in making these dishes, so they don’t disappoint! If you aren’t familiar with the sandwich it has ham, pulled pork, mayo, mustard, and pickles in between two slices of sweet bread. It’s pressed down just like a Cuban sandwich. The restaurant is a bit far, but I don’t mind the drive because the food is spectacular.

ME ENCANTA este pequeño restaurante. Venir aquí realmente me hace sentir como si estuviera en casa otra vez. El restaurante en sí tiene esa sensación de Miami. Está un poco lejos del campus, pero vale la pena conducir. El menú cambia a diario, pero los precios son geniales. Los platos que realmente destacan aquí son el sándwich de Ropa Vieja y Media Noche. Ropa Vieja siempre es un golpe o una falla para mí, pero aquí fue un HIT definitivo! La carne suave y bien emparejada con su arroz y frijoles. Ropa Vieja es carne molida con un poco de salsa de tomate en la parte superior. Me gustaría obtener esto todos los días si pudiera. Su Media Noche también es fenomenal. Me recuerda a los de Sergio en Miami. Se enorgullecen de hacer estos platos, ¡así que no decepcionan! Si no está familiarizado con el sándwich, tiene jamón, cerdo desmenuzado, mayonesa, mostaza y encurtidos entre dos rebanadas de pan dulce. Está presionado como un sándwich cubano. El restaurante está un poco lejos, pero no me importa el camino porque la comida es espectacular.

Flaco’s Cuban Bakery

Flaco’s has two locations in Gainesville, one in midtown and downtown. They both have the same tasty menu. MY favorite items here are their pastries and empanadas. In my opinion this is the best place in Gainesville to eat a pastelito de guayava. They’re extremely tasty and just remind me of home. Their empanadas are also nice and cheesy. Usually if I’m in Midtown I’ll just stop in for a cafe con leech and a pastelito. It really makes me feel like I’m back in Miami going to the bakery in the Sedanos shopping center for breakfast.

Flaco’s tiene dos ubicaciones en Gainesville, una en el centro y el centro de la ciudad. Ambos tienen el mismo sabroso menú. Mis artículos favoritos aquí son sus pasteles y empanadas. La Familia Cuban Sandwich Shop – THIS LOCATION IS NOW CLOSED

A lot of people don’t know about this gem that’s just about 10 minutes from Rawlings Hall. This little sandwich shop sells a pretty great Cuban Sandwich. The bread is fantastic, it’s truly what makes the sandwich as great as it is. It’s never too full here and the prices are great. Along with selling delicious Cuban sandwiches, they have great pastries and pollo rellenos. The menu doesn’t normally change, but it contains a decent amount of Cuban delights!

Mucha gente no sabe acerca de esta joya que está a solo 10 minutos de Rawlings Hall. Esta pequeña tienda de sándwiches vende un sándwich cubano bastante bueno. El pan es fantástico, es realmente lo que hace que el sándwich sea tan bueno como lo es. Nunca está demasiado lleno aquí y los precios son geniales. Además de vender deliciosos sándwiches cubanos, tienen excelentes pasteles y rellenos de pollo. ¡El menú normalmente no cambia, pero contiene una cantidad decente de delicias cubanas!

La Aurora Latin Market

This is more of an honorable mention because it’s not a restaurant, it’s a Latin supermarket! Here is where you can get all the goodies you’d usually find in Sedanos, Presidente, or Navarro. They have Hispanic fruits, meats, beans, seasonings, sweets, chips, juices, and much more. If you’re every missing home or just need a certain ingredient for your arroz con frijoles, stop in here. I guarantee you’ll find what you need!
